Research programme

Long-term rather than short-term research

SWOV carries out so-called 'there-and-then' rather than 'here-and-now' research. This means that in considering the possible application of the results SWOV does not focus its research at the short-term ('now'), but at the middle and long-term.

 

Public

A second important feature of SWOV research is that it is always aimed at knowledge that can be widely used and is not only useful for a single user, e.g. one road authority, one municipality, or one police district. One of the consequences is that, generally speaking, research results can only contribute to increasing road safety when they are generally available. Therefore, SWOV's research results are, in principle, always public.

 

Quality

TThe quality of SWOV's activities and products is guaranteed in various ways:

National and international cooperation

In the realization of the programme SWOV cooperates with other research and educational organizations, both in the Netherlands and abroad. Such cooperation results in higher quality, greater efficiency, and a broadening of the research. SWOV offers its own personnel as well as PhD researchers at various universities the possibility of carrying out their PhD research within the SWOV research programme.

SWOV regards international cooperation as a possibility of participating in research for which the Netherlands on its own is too small a country. In the framework of the European Union, SWOV therefore makes a contribution to a number of large-scale research projects. In addition, such international participation leads to quality improvement.
